What to Expect in Your First Muay Thai Class at Lotus

Your first class is designed to be low-pressure and high-energy. You’ll start with a structured warm-up, work through fundamental striking technique — jabs, crosses, kicks, knees — on pads and bags, and finish with conditioning work that leaves you feeling genuinely accomplished. No sparring. No pressure to keep up.

Most first-timers tell us the anxiety they had walking in was completely gone by the end of their first class. That’s not an accident — it’s how we run things.

We know every member by name, and when we see your name on the roster, we’ll even bring in a second coach to help you and the newer members get extra attention!

“I recommend this gym for anybody looking to get in shape in a positive, inclusive environment”

I was really out of shape when I started and had no real interest in martial arts – I just wanted to get fitter. Now my fitness has improved a lot and I’m really starting to enjoy the sport!

Martial Arts Classes in Toronto – Common Questions

Do I need experience to start Muay Thai at Lotus?

No experience needed. Our fundamentals classes are built for people who have never trained before. You’ll learn striking technique, footwork, and the basics of Muay Thai at a pace that works for you — there’s no pressure to keep up with anyone else. We also know every member by name, so when we see you sign up for your first class – if you’re brand new, we’ll even have a second coach to give you personalized attention.

What gear do I need for my first Muay Thai class in Toronto?

Just athletic clothing and water. We train barefoot, so you don’t even need running shoes! If you claim our new member pack, your gloves and hand wraps are included. Otherwise, we have loaner gloves available while you decide if Muay Thai is right for you.

How much do Muay Thai classes cost in Toronto?

New members start with our intro offer — gloves, wraps, and three classes for $115. After that, we offer monthly memberships and class passes. Check out our pricing page for current rates.

Is there sparring in beginner Muay Thai classes?

No. Beginners Boost and Fundamentals classes focus entirely on technique, pad work, and conditioning — no sparring. Sparring is available for students who have built a solid foundation and choose to participate, and only after we’ve given them the green light. You don’t have to worry about getting punched or kicked in our classes.

What is Muay Thai and how is it different from kickboxing?

Muay Thai is a Thai striking art from Thailand that uses fists, elbows, knees, and kicks, plus clinching — earning it the name “the art of eight limbs.” Kickboxing typically uses only punches, kicks and knees, with no elbows or clinching. Muay Thai’s inclusion of elbows, knees, and clinching (stand-up grappling) makes it more versatile for self-defense and is why it’s become a core component of MMA training worldwide.

Where is Lotus Fitness located in Toronto?

We’re at 17 Atlantic Avenue in Liberty Village, Toronto (M6K 3E7). Close to Exhibition GO Station, the King streetcar, and the 63 Ossington or Dufferin bus. Street parking is available on Atlantic Avenue.
