About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
What is BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based grappling martial art that teaches you to control and submit opponents using joint locks and chokes.
Unlike striking arts, BJJ works at close range on the ground, using leverage and body mechanics rather than size or power. It’s often described as physical chess: a problem-solving discipline that rewards patience and technique over raw athleticism.
At Lotus, we train No-Gi BJJ exclusively — meaning classes are held in shorts and a rash guard rather than the traditional kimono (gi). No-Gi training is faster-paced, places greater emphasis on body control and wrestling-based entries, and translates directly to MMA and real-world self-defence situations.
It’s the format that has driven the growth of submission grappling competitions like ADCC and EBI, and it’s where the sport is heading. If you’ve watched grappling and wanted to learn — this is where you start.

Welcoming and Inclusive:
What to Expect in Your First BJJ Class at Lotus
Your first class will include a warm-up, technique instruction from one of our coaches, and structured drilling — all at a pace that works for someone new to grappling.
You won’t be thrown into live rolling on day one. We build your foundation first: basic positions, movement patterns, and the principles of control that underpin everything else in BJJ. You’ll also note our BJJ program takes a Constraints-Led-Approach where you’ll learn through playful exploration which fosters problem-solving and adaptability.
The community on the mats at Lotus is genuinely welcoming. Grappling can feel unfamiliar before you start — being on the ground with a training partner is uncomfortable until you understand what’s happening. Our more experienced students know this and make the transition easy.
Most first-timers leave their first class thinking it was more fun than they expected, and already planning when they’re coming back.

Frequently Asked Questions
BJJ Classes in Toronto – Common Questions
None at all. Our beginner classes are designed for people who have never grappled before. You’ll start with fundamental positions, basic movements, and core concepts — no live rolling until you’re ready for it.
Traditional BJJ is practiced in a kimono (gi), where grips on the fabric are a core part of the game. No-Gi BJJ is practiced in shorts and a rash guard — no fabric grips, faster pace, and technique that translates more directly to MMA and real-world grappling. At Lotus, we train No-Gi exclusively.
No — and this is one of BJJ’s defining qualities. The art is built around leverage and technique, which means a smaller, less athletic person can reliably control a larger one with proper training. Most beginners are surprised how quickly this becomes real in their first few months on the mat.
New members can start with a three-class intro pass for $59 — no membership required. After that, we offer monthly memberships and class packs to suit different schedules and budgets. Check our packages here.
Two to three times per week is the sweet spot for most beginners — enough frequency to build retention and see real progress, without overloading your body while it adapts to grappling movement patterns. Once a week is fine to start if that’s what works for your schedule.
We’re at 17 Atlantic Avenue in Liberty Village, Toronto (M6K 3E7). Close to Exhibition GO Station, the King streetcar, and the 63 Ossington or Dufferin bus. Street parking is available on Atlantic Avenue.
